The best sublimation papers can be printed similarly to regular printing paper. The sublimation printer can print with any ink, even using inkjet printing. Sublimation paper requires special ink. Your transfer project won’t succeed if you don’t use this ink.
Sublimation sheets are created when the paper is heated and on a clean surface. Sublimation ink from sublimation sheets can temporarily become gas when heated. The polyester coating’s pores will also expand, allowing the gaseous ink to escape the paper and deposit on the surface.

How To Use Sublimation Papers
You may be familiar with sublimation if you have read my Cricut post. Sublimation refers to converting a solid (in our case, ink) into a gas by heating it with a heat press at 400 degrees.
Sublimation allows the dye to be incorporated into the fabric’s fibers. Sublimation is possible on both polyester fabrics and materials coated with polymer.
A shirt of at least 70% polyester will yield the best results. You can achieve a vintage look using fewer colors and a lower percentage of polyester.
What Is a Sublimation Paper?

The Process

Small Format Heat Press

- A Sub Brand Paper125g is of the highest quality and overall best.
- A Sub Brand Paper 120g, the “middle” of road paper, is great for any project that requires high quality and vibrant colors.
- A Sub Brand Paper 105g is the lightest but offers high quality and vibrant colors.
- Printer Jack Sublimation paper – Great prints at a very affordable price. It was the first brand that I used. The one for Black Shirts was not what I liked, and I threw it out after just one use.
- Koala Brand Sublimation Paper – Drys quickly has a high transfer rate and can be used with most substrates.
How To Print Sublimation Papers
Sublimation printing, in short, is the process of transferring sublimation dyes onto a transfer sheet. The dyes are then imprinted on textiles or other compatible materials using heat. When high temperatures are applied, the ink infuses into the fabric, shirt, bag, bag, or phone case and creates seamless designs from seam to seam.
Heat transfers can be done in full color and are pretty permanent. Sublimation prints are not susceptible to cracking or peeling like when iron vinyl is applied to shirts using heat transfer vinyl. Sublimation transfers are seamless and have no thickness as they embed into the material’s poly surface. Infusible ink transfer sheets refer to sublimation sheets that have been printed.
This is also a different process than screen printing. A screen print will end up with paint on the shirt, but not infusion. Infusible ink is my favorite for mugs, but images can only be cut out of certain colors. You can’t use photos or multi-colored designs.
How To Place Sublimation Paper In a Printer
Sublimation does not use liquids. Sublimation papers are heated inks from a solid state to become gas. This printing method bonds to poly fibers. The pores expand when the poly fibers are heated. The gas is then allowed to enter these pores, which fuses the fabric before returning to its solid state. This allows the ink to be part of the fibers, not just on top.
Which Side Is Correct For Sublimation Papers?
When deciding which side to print, your design must be printed on the bright side of your sublimation paper. Contrado will print your design on sublimation paper. This will make it easy to identify which side is right.
Sublimation paper will make your colors appear pale. This is normal and not what your finished press will look like. Your colors will be vibrant once they are transferred to the medium. Sublimation is better than transfer printing because you can choose from a wider range of colors.
